Platanias is a village 15 kilometres west from Chania and is the largest resort of Western Crete. Once a small village, it owes its name to the many plane trees (platania in Greek), which stand on the shore of the river Platanias, on the mouth of which the village is located. What it lacks in old Cretan atmosphere it more than makes up for with modern, lively, Greek tavernas, bars, clubs and shops selling all the essentials. A wide range of watersports are available from the beach which has beautiful, long, sandy beaches and pristine, clear waters lapping the shores. Frequent local buses link Platanias to Chania.
