travel news - Maldives Makes For Hot Honeymoon Hideaways
Maldives makes for hot honeymoon hideaways
November 26 2007
Those getting married in the winter almost invariably head to somewhere hot overseas for their honeymoons, with the Maldives being one of the favourite destinations, weddings website hitched.co.uk has said.
Spokesperson Francesca Moore said couples liked to go for "seclusion" and "white sandy beaches", which the islands were well equipped to provide.
"The Maldives are very popular with their white sandy beaches and anywhere that has over-water bungalows, which are built on stilts over water and are very romantic," she added.
Ms Moore also said Dubai made for an ideal stopover on the way out east, while those who preferred romantic European locations went for Italian destinations such as Venice or Florence.
Research by Mintel last year, reported by the Daily Telegraph, found that between £500 million and £600 million is spent annually by Britons on honeymoons overseas, double the figure in 1998.
It also found the average first-night hotel stay costs £205.
