travel news - "Record Year" For Travel
"Record year" for travel
February 15 2008
Travel bookings reached a record level in 2007 according to newly released statistics from one industry commentator.
Final figures from the Guild of Travel Management Companies (GTMC) reveal that in the region of 14 million bookings were made by its members last year, Easier reports.
In particular, a "massive" increase in hotel and rail transactions was noted during the 12 months leading to December 2007.
"In the end, 2007 turned out to be even better than we had hoped ... I was predicting that we would top 13 million transactions. In fact, that proved to be a conservative estimate, as we ended the year just 40,000 bookings shy of the 14 million mark," Philip Carlisle, chief executive of the GTMC commented.
Last year, members of the organisation booked 6.8 million flights - a rise of six per cent - booked almost 3.2 million hotel rooms - an increase of 20 per cent - and booked 2.8 million rail tickets - a growth of 23 per cent.
