travel news - Xochimilco Festival In Mexico
Xochimilco Festival in Mexico
March 25 2008
This Easter, Xochimilco Festival is taking place in Mexico and is a fantastic opportunity for holidaymakers to experience the true beauty of the country.
Held annually at Easter, the four-day "prettiest flower" event dates back to precolonial times.
The festival was originally held to honour the Mexican goddess of flowers Xochipilli and the goddess of dance Maculxochitl. Doing so was believed to ensure good harvests for the coming year.
Now, each year sees a young woman is crowned La Flor Mas Bella del Ejido, in English this means "the most beautiful flower of the land".
The girl then presides over the ensuing parades which take place on colourfully decorated flower-covered barges along Mexico's canals.
Other art, culinary and sporting events also take place during the festival.
