For an experience of true Chinese culture then head to Cheung Chau, Hong Kong's largest fishing island, this May.
The Cheung Chau Bun Festival takes place annually and is believed to be a hundred years old.
The festival draws thousands of tourists each year and has its roots in a folk tradition hat saw locals pray to their gods for safety from piracy on the seas.
For three days preceding the festival, inhabitants of the island stick to a vegetarian. The main festival itself sees the erection of a 16-metre high bamboo tower in front of the Pak Tai temple.
This tower is covered in steamed buns which act as an offering to the ancient Chinese spirits.
Bun snatching used to be a common part of this ritual and saw men scampering up the tower to reach the highest buns which were believed to afford their families good luck.
