April showers festivals in Mexico

March 31 2008

Next month, a shower of festivals will fall in Mexico, as the country celebrates its heritage and culture.

One such festival taking place in April is the Sardine Fishing Ritual, also known as Pesca de la Sardina.

Taking place in Tacotalpa, Tabasco, the actual ceremony is held in a mysterious cavern known as Cueva de la Sardina (Cave of the Sardines).

Each year a religious ritual dating back centuries takes place, in a bid to implore Mother Nature to ensure a good harvest by bringing rain.

During the ritual, participants fish for sardines and the more sardines that are caught throughout the duration of the ceremony will mean a better harvest.

What residents will not be hoping for this harvest is a badly behaved bull. A bull was recently jailed in Mexico after locals found he had eaten their corn crops and destroyed two shops.
