Tenerife wines awarded medals
May 28 2008
Some of Tenerife's top winemakers have been awarded gold and silver medals in a competition in France.
Some 5,000 wines from 30 countries were entered into the Challenge Internationale du Vin, with six from Tenerife catching the judges' attention, reports Tenerife News.
Three of the island's Denomination de Origen wine areas were awarded medals for their products.
Wine lovers visiting Abona, La Orotava and the Guimar valley during a Tenerife holiday could pick up some of the winning wines during their travels.
Vina Melosar 2007, a dry white, the Gran Tehyda semi-seco 2007 and a Vinatigo Tintilla 2006 all received gold medals.
Silver awards were given to the 2007 Vina Tamaide, a Vina Melosar semi-seco from the same year and a 2005 Testamento Esencia Malvasia.
The largest wine-producing region in Tenerife is Tacoronte-Acentejo in the north-west, according to the Canary Forum website.
Those enjoying a Tenerife holiday can enjoy 1,200 hectares of vineyard and 42 wineries in this region.
