travel news - Brits Abroad 'just Want To Have Fun'
Brits abroad 'just want to have fun'
June 23 2008
Many hard working Britons fail to set themselves a holiday budget, claiming they don't think about such things as they feel they deserve to treat themselves.
According to National Savings and Investments, more than a third of Britons do not set limits to their overseas spending, leading to "nasty surprises" on their return for 26 per cent.
However, nearly half of holidaying Brits claim that they do not wish to concern themselves with money while soaking up the sun on holiday because they work hard and deserve a treat, while 30 per cent claim they get "caught up in the excitement" of being on holiday and neglect to think about cash.
"There is no doubt that holidays and spending while abroad are costing Brits a lot more than many bargain for, but people need to think past simply enjoying themselves and to plan their finances so there are no nasty shocks when they get home and face the bills," Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I, noted.
A total 57 per cent of holidaymakers overspent on gifts, souvenirs and clothes, while a third splashed out on adventure sports.
