travel news - Cultural Sites Attract "alternative Tourists" To Bulgaria
Cultural sites attract "alternative tourists" to Bulgaria
August 15 2008
Bulgaria is developing into more than just a sunshine and beach destination, according to tourist figures.
Sofia Echo reports that the Bulgarian Association for Alternative Tourism has seen a strong increase in the number of people taking holidays in the country which provide access to the cultural attractions of the region. It is estimated that last year a total of 35,000 visitors opted for an "alternative" view of the European country.
Aside from the usual tourist resorts, Bulgaria has a lot on offer to holidaymakers wanting to do more than relax on the beach for two weeks. In particular, there has been strong growth in activity-based pursuits such as horseback riding and hiking in the country's stunning landscape.
Meanwhile, thrill-seeking tourists can even enjoy a bit of white water rafting in the impressive Kresnensko gorge, while those looking for a more sedate day can take a tour of Bulgaria's famous architectural buildings.
