Italy holds appeal for book lovers

Holidaymakers seeking cultural distractions while abroad may wish to head to Italy, and in particular, Rome, it has been suggested.

The comment comes from travel community TripAdvisor, as it reveals what it claims are the top ten literary destinations in the world.

TripAdvisor notes that the destinations were once home to or a source of inspiration for some of the greatest ever writers and that they now attract contemporary travellers.

"Bookworms will enjoy delving into these destinations where many of the greatest literary minds in history lived and wrote," Michele Perry, vice-president of global communications for TripAdvisor commented.

Italy placed ninth on the list, with Rome noted to be the breeding ground for such influential authors as Virgil, author of The Aeneid and Keats.

Travellers visiting Rome for literary holidays are advised to visit the Keats-Shelley House on the Spanish Steps.

The Spanish Steps, known as Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti in Italian, are comprised of 138 steps and alongside such constructions as the Trevi Fountain and the Coliseum make up some of the most memorable landmarks in Rome.
