Holidaymakers 'should check home insurance'

Experts have warned that holidaymakers heading off to take advantage of warm weather abroad should be careful to keep an eye on the home front, by checking the details of their home insurance.

Darren Black, home insurance expert at Confused.com, warned that many home insurance policies become invalidated if there is no-one in the house for more than 30 days at a time.

Mr Black said that tourists heading off for a dose of sun, sea and sand this winter should also be careful not to advertise the fact that they are away.

He suggested cancelling newspaper subscriptions and milk deliveries in case the build-up outside the front door proved to be an invitation to burglars.

Mr Black added: "It is important for anyone flying south for winter […] to catch some winter sun, to spend a couple of minutes ensuring that their nests are well and truly protected."

This warning follows the news that several Premier League footballers' homes have been broken into by thieves during highly publicised absences.

The Liverpool Echo reported recently that Liverpool stars Lucas Leiva, Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard have all had their homes targeted by thieves while they were playing matches.
