travel news - Italy Wins Top Prize
Italy wins top prize
November 26 2008
Italy has been voted the most popular European travel destination in the UK's largest survey of travel habits.
The survey, conducted by the Telegraph, found that Italy was the number one destination of choice after asking the opinions of over 25,000 readers.
A hotel in Rome, the Hotel Cavilieri, walked away with the prize for the best hotel in Europe.
Italian destinations including Rome, Florence, Pisa and Venice have long proved popular amongst UK tourists because of they offer a combination of high culture and excellent summer weather.
The survey also found that holidays are one of the luxuries that people are not willing to forgo during the recession.
More than half of those polled said they spent more that £1,000 on their last holiday and one in 20 said they spent over £5,000.
With hotels like the Cavilieri offering the kind of holiday luxury that UK tourists want, Italy could look forward to topping the holiday destination charts for years to come.
