travel news - Maldives Tourism 'booming Despite Credit Crunch'
Maldives tourism 'booming despite credit crunch'
December 1 2008
Reports from two of the biggest players in the Maldives tourism sector have revealed that the industry is booming in the country, despite the global economic downturn.
Spokesmen from two of the Maldives' biggest hotel groups told Miadhu News that tourists are still flocking to the islands despite the credit crunch - drawn by the promise of sun, sand and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
Shoumo Mukarjee, the sales manager of Universal Enterprises, said that all his group's resorts were fully booked until the end of January and there had been no cancellations.
Similarly, a representative from Villa hotels revealed that his group had seen no cancellations so far and all their hotels were fully booked until the end of February.
The enduring popularity of these islands could have something to do with their well-established reputation as a haven for honeymooning couples.
